Cabinet color is the single biggest visual decision in a kitchen refresh. Here's what we're seeing trend in 2026 across Madison-area cabinet refinishing projects — and which of these colors will still look current in five years.
1. Warm Whites Still Dominate
Crisp cool whites are giving way to warmer whites with a hint of cream or greige. SW Alabaster, BM White Dove and SW Pure White remain the top three. They're timeless, brighten the kitchen, and pair with any countertop. If you're going from dark wood, our wood-to-white process is built for exactly this.
2. Deep Greens
Evergreen Fog (SW), Backwoods (BM) and Pewter Green (SW) are the breakout colors of the last two years. They feel rooted, warm, and surprisingly neutral. Best paired with brass or matte black hardware and warm-wood floors.
3. Soft Blues
Hale Navy and Newburyport Blue (BM) on the lower cabinets with white uppers is the most-requested two-tone combination. It adds personality without committing to color on every surface.
4. Charcoal and Black
Iron Ore (SW), Tricorn Black (SW) and Cheating Heart (BM) on islands or full lower cabinets feel modern and grounded. Best in kitchens with abundant natural light — they can read heavy in darker spaces.
5. Warm Greiges
Accessible Beige (SW), Agreeable Gray (SW) and Edgecomb Gray (BM) for clients who want quietly updated without committing to a statement color. Reads premium, ages well.
6. Two-Tone Combinations
Mixing colors between uppers and lowers (or perimeter and island) is now standard. Common pairings: white uppers + green or navy lowers, or wood-tone uppers + painted lowers. Visual interest without the cost of going bold everywhere.
7. Colors Falling Out of Favor
Pure cool grays. Yellow-cast cream from the 2000s. Stark high-contrast black-and-white. Anything 'gray-beige' that reads neither.
8. Hardware Pairings That Land
Brushed brass and matte black are still leading. Polished chrome is making a comeback in transitional kitchens. Always bring hardware samples home and hold them against your chosen cabinet color before ordering.
9. Timeless vs Trendy
Warm whites and soft greens are likely to read fresh for 8–10 years. Deep navies and forest greens carry more risk but also more personality. If you're planning to sell within 3 years, lean timeless — see how paint colors affect home value.
10. What It Costs
Color choice doesn't significantly affect refinishing cost — see our Madison cabinet painting cost guide for full pricing. The exception is going from dark stained wood to white, which requires more priming and slightly increases labor.
