Low-VOC and Eco-Friendly Paints: A Healthier Home Painting Guide

What low-VOC actually means, why it matters indoors, and which paints we trust for families with kids, pets and chemical sensitivities.

Paint chemistry has changed dramatically in the last decade. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — the chemicals that cause the headache-inducing 'new paint smell' — are now optional in most premium product lines. If you have kids, pets, asthma, or chemical sensitivities, this matters.

1. What VOCs Actually Are

VOCs are carbon-based compounds that off-gas as paint dries. They contribute to indoor air pollution and have been linked to short-term symptoms (headaches, eye irritation) and longer-term concerns. Low-VOC paint has under 50 g/L; zero-VOC paint has under 5 g/L.

2. What 'Low-VOC' Doesn't Mean

'Low-VOC' refers to the base paint — tinting (especially with deep colors) can add VOCs back in. We use low-VOC colorants whenever a client specifically requests a zero-VOC system.

3. Brands We Use for Sensitive Homes

Sherwin-Williams Harmony and ProMar 200 Zero VOC, Benjamin Moore Natura, and AURA all deliver a fully zero-VOC system with excellent coverage. They cost slightly more than standard premium lines but the difference for a single-room job is small.

4. Where Low-VOC Matters Most

Nurseries and Children's Rooms

Babies and small children are most sensitive to indoor air quality. Zero-VOC is the default in any nursery interior painting project we do.

Bedrooms

You spend a third of your day breathing the air in your bedroom. Even mild residual off-gassing matters here more than in a hallway.

Kitchens and Cabinets

For cabinet refinishing, we use waterborne enamels that are low-VOC and cure to a hard, washable finish — see our cabinet refinishing process for the details.

5. Beyond VOCs: Other Healthy-Home Factors

Mildew-resistant additives in bath paints reduce mold growth. Lead-safe practices on pre-1978 homes prevent dust contamination. Proper ventilation during application reduces concentration of any volatiles that are released.

6. Recommended for Wisconsin Homes

Wisconsin homes are sealed up tight for winter, which means anything you put on the walls stays in the air longer. Low-VOC paint is a particularly good fit for our climate. Pair it with the right paint colors and you have a finish that's healthier and better-looking.
